ABOUT THE ISSUE.

I feel it an honor to have been requested to bring out a special issue in memory of Prof.S.Minakshisundaram, an outstanding mathematician of twentieth century, whose publications attracted International recognition. With his association the Departments of Mathematical Physics (presently called Applied Mathematics) and Mathematics in Andhra University rose to occupy prominent positions in India.

The present issue includes 14 papers , besides two more highlighting and explaining the achievements of Prof.Minakshisundaram. The article of Prof.Avramidi specifically describes the contributions of Prof.Minakshisundaram to Mathematical Physics. The Research papers cover different branches such as Differential Equations, Algebra, Topology, Graph Theory and Statistics. They are original articles deserving publication in international journals. I thank the authors for preferring the Proceedings to publish their work and their cooperation in attendding to the suggested revisions promptly.

Three papers are concerned with differential equations, the field of major interest to Prof.Minakshisundaram. While Murry and Fausett derive the sufficient conditions for the controllability of non-linear first order matrix Sylvester systems, Siddharth and Lakshmi examine the Riccati equations in the context of population dynamics. Sarojamma carries out a perturbation analysis on non-linear equtions governing the body flow with a small geometric parameter, a truly Mathematical Physics problem.

Eight papers come from Algebra, the field of research Prof.Minakshisundaram encouraged in the Department of Mathematics in Andhra University. Subramanyam introduces the concept of convexity in Boolean metric spaces and establishes that every Boolean metric space has a convex hull. Sribala reviews the recent work on functional analytic methods in triple systems. Ramabhadra Sarma and Ram Reddy report a recursive method to invert centro symmetric and symmetric positive definite matrices. Swaminadhan and Velrajan deal with generalised p-rings with atomic based nil-radical and injective objects. Ramana murthy and Srinivas discuss characterisation of partial orders on regular semigroups . Swamy with his associates Kishore and Rao develop a theory of Almost Boolean rings and present their structure and representation as sheaves over locally Boolean spaces.

The paper related to Topology by Kannan and Saradhy determine the metric spaces which have the periodic point property and resolves completely the issues related to zero dimensional spaces. In graph theory, Nagrajarao and Narasimhma introduce a new class of path oriented trees and show that every path oriented tree has a and b valuations. Haragopal, Pundit and Narasimha try to identify clusters through the concept of shortest and approach distances.

I thank the Editor of Publications Prof.I.V.Radhakrishna Murthy and the Akademi for conceiving the idea of publishing a special issue in Mathematical Sciences and didicate it to Prof.Minakshisundaram. I hope that this venture will be appreciated by the readership.
